Phil Cannon Memorial Scholarship

April 19, 2017

The FedEx St. Jude Classic and the University of Memphis have collaborated to create the Phil Cannon Memorial Scholarship to benefit outstanding journalism students who have demonstrated a commitment to the community.

Phil Cannon (BA ’78) enjoyed life to the fullest, and much of that joy came from being involved for nearly 50 years with the FedEx St. Jude Classic, Memphis’ official PGA TOUR event. Phil served as Tournament Director for the event from 1999-2015.

He began his work with the tournament as a volunteer in 1968 as a sophomore at White Station High School in Memphis. From 1968-1989, before joining the full-time tournament staff in 1990, Phil volunteered for the event as a scorer inside the Media Center, often taking his vacation time to volunteer for the event. During Phil’s tenure as Tournament Director, the event achieved great success, and to date the tournament has generated more than $35 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

“The Phil Cannon Memorial Scholarship will significantly enhance our department’s new Sport Journalism program,” said David Arant, Chair of the University of Memphis Department of Journalism and Strategic Media. “Sport Journalism is a rapidly growing area for journalism study at the University of Memphis, and this scholarship spotlights the opportunities for our students in the field of Sport Journalism.”

With approximately 325 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, the Department of Journalism and Strategic Media trains tomorrow’s media innovators. Its programs focus on applied journalism to help students learn the concepts and skills to be effective news, public relations and advertising professionals. Last year, the UofM was one of two universities to have an internship agreement with Rio’s Olympic Organizing Committee, sending 14 journalism students to Rio de Janeiro to serve as interns covering the Olympic Games.

Current FedEx St. Jude Classic Tournament Director Darrell Smith sees this as a perfect way to celebrate Phil’s legacy . “We are honored to partner with the University of Memphis, a place that meant so much to Phil throughout his life. Phil had a passion for journalism and the people that work in the industry. We are excited to know the Phil Cannon Memorial Scholarship will allow students even more opportunity as they pursue their lifelong dreams.”

The scholarship recipient will also play an active role in the production of the FedEx St. Jude Classic and work alongside the fabulous men and women who cover the event throughout Tournament Week. This individual will have a front row seat to Memphis’ PGA TOUR event inside the Media Center and be exposed to all facets of a professional sporting event.

Contributions to the Phil Cannon Memorial Scholarship can be made payable to the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Checks can be mailed to FedEx St. Jude Classic, 3325 Club at Southwind, Memphis, TN 38125.
